With the release of Pro Tools 2022.4 on April 26, 2022, Avid has introduced THREE new versions of the software, as well as a new Drum Machine and Synthesizer, increased recording and more workflow capabilities across the board. You can download this latest update right now from your Avid account.

Pro Tools 2022.4 - Three New Versions of Software
a) Pro Tools Artist -budget conscious, entry level software for people that don't need all the feature of the full Pro Tools software
b) Pro Tools Studio - formerly know as "Pro Tools" this version doubles the track count up to 512, introduces Dolby Atmos, and includes advanced Automation and ClipFX features formerly only found in Ultimate
c) Pro Tools Flex - for high-end audio production facilities and professionals. It includes Ultimate software, and enhanced workflow features included with third-party licenses aimed at professional studio facilities
These new versions of Pro Tools expand upon, and replace the previous software with new options, workflow enhancements, and new virtual instruments. The introduction of the "Artist" line also allows people that are just starting out with Pro Tools, or don't need all of the enhanced capabilities to get a version that won't break the bank. Let's take a look at the differences in each version.
Pro Tools Artist
The newest addition to the Pro Tools product line allows the next generation of content creators, artists, and music producers to produce amazing material without feeling overwhelmed, or breaking the bank. Priced at $99 per year (or $9.99 per month), this version of Pro Tools is full "forward-compatible" and allows you to take your projects to larger studios using more advanced versions of the software. Some of the key features include:
- 32 Audio Tracks
- 16 simultaneous Audio Inputs
- 32 Instrument Tracks
- Artist Bundle PlugIns
- New GrooveCell, and SynthCell Virtual Instruments
- Melodyne Essential PlugIn
- Support for Core Audio, ASIO, and WASAPI-compatible Audio Interface
Pro Tools Studio
Formerly known as regular "Pro Tools" software, this new version adds a bunch of new capabilities including Dolby Atmos mixing. Avid has doubled the amount of Audio Tracks to 512, as well as brought features from the flagship "Ultimate" software such as Advanced Automation features, ClipFx functions, and increased the total number of Audio Inputs to 64 (previously 32). Key features include:
- 512 Audio Tracks (up from 256 prior)
- Support for Pro Tools Carbon
- Dolby Atmos / Spatial Audio Mixing
- 64 Audio Inputs (up from 32 prior)
- New GrooveCell, and SynthCell Virtual Instruments
Pro Tools Flex
Pro Tools Flex is a software bundle that includes Ultimate software, as well as additional third-party software licenses aimed at increasing workflow in large studios working in Music, or Post Production. One thing is particular that is appealing is the ability to support up to 256 Audio Inputs without the need for HDX hardware. This especially useful for anyone mixing in Dolby Atmost / Spatial Audio. Features include:
- Pro Tools Ultimate Software
- 256 Audio Inputs via Core Audio / ASIO
- 2048 Audio Tracks
- 1024 Aux Tracks / Routing Folders
- 512 Master Faders
- SOUNDFLOW workflow automation platform - allows for custom Macro enabling you to create complex multi-task workflows at the press of a button, MIDI Controller, or HID device.
GrooveCell
GrooveCell is a new Virtual Drum Machine and Sequencer included with all versions of Pro Tools. Based around a traditional 16-pad bank of sounds, with velocity layers, GrooveCell allows you to import your own audio files to create custom drum kits, as well as using the built-in bank of sounds. With control over pitch, eq, distortion, drive, and dynamics, GrooveCell give you a quick and flexible way to put together drum parts and patterns.
SynthCell
Developed in conjunction with UJAM, SynthCell is a dynamic Polyphonic Synthesizer with an easy-to-use layout, 2 Oscillators, 2 Multi-Mode Filters, an Arpeggiator, and much more. Designed around a clean, intuitive interface, SynthCell allows you to create your own sounds, or build upon the large preset library included.
