The latest version of Pro Tools, 2024.3 released March 7, 2024, now offers Pro Tools MIDI Effects Plugins that allow you to quickly create and modify and experiment with MIDI to bring your musical ideas to life. This allows track producers to have creative resources that were never yet available in Pro tools prior to now.

Example functions include triggering multiple notes and changing velocity and pitch, to auto-generating musical riffs, rhythm, arpeggiators and more! A user can now fine-tune and automate MIDI effects right in real time which was not possible in prior versions of Pro tools.

- Pro Tools Sketch enhancements including bonus content and recording count-off (iPad only) as well as and improved interoperability with the Pro Tools timeline
- MacOS 14.3 Sonoma support plus numerous bug fixes and performance improvements
Other features released this past year include the introduction of a new value-added content stream ("Sonic Drop") and a new sample playback tool ("PlayCell"). Avid also launched an iPad app and a window in Pro Tools for Non-Linear Music Creation ("Sketch") and to help bring MIDI in Pro Tools to the forefront!
MIDI CHAINS
One example is adding an Arpeggiator: In prior years, if you wanted to add an Arpeggiator, you would have to create several tracks and pass them through the MIDI menus which was time consuming. So Avid developed a new way to pass MIDI from plugin to plugin via the Insert slots on the Instrument track.
The outcome of this is MIDI Chains: at the moment of loading MIDI capable plugins (i.e. MIDI processors, VIs) on the Instrument track, the track automatically goes into Chain mode. This means that you can process MIDI in sequence and from top-to-bottom. You can also route the output of the track's Chain to the MIDI inputs of other Instrument/MIDI tracks. This allows you to record the results of MIDI processing on a track as well as feeding the destination track's Chain. You can also feed the Chain from an Instrument track into the output of a MIDI track. Track Chain routings get very specific, but you can also use them for other purposes, such as isolating the MIDI notes that are used for triggering an articulation on a different MIDI track.
MIDI DELAY COMPENSATION
Improvements have been made in the Pro Tools’ engine to improve performance when working with virtual instruments and resolve long-standing issues with delay compensation.
