With a 50% increase in Voices, Pro Tools | Ultimate now give you access to 384 Tracks, with a total of up to 768. Now you can have the same amount of tracks as an HDX3 system, without the hardware.
Since the beginning of Pro Tools, part of the technology that makes the systems run is known as Voices. You can equate Voices to Audio Tracks, each Voice equals 1 track. For example: if you have a 32-voice system, you have access to work with 32 audio tracks simultaneously. Since Pro Tools software comes in several different varieties (First, Pro Tools, Ultimate) each version has the ability to use a different amount of voices.
Pro Tools | First = 16 total voices/tracks (up to 96K sample rate)
Pro Tools = 128 total voices/tracks *at 44.1K/48K sample rate
(88.2K/96K = 64 voices - 176.4K/192K = 32 voices)
Pro Tools | Ultimate = 384 voices/tracks (up to 768 total) *at 44.1K/48K sample rate
(88.2K/96K = 192 voices - 176.4K/192K = 96 voices)
In the past, the only way to get access to the higher voice/track counts you had to purchase a 3-card HDX system. Each of the HDX cards gives you access to 256 voices. A 2-card system would give you 512 voices, and a 3-card system gives you the total of 768 voices. Now, you can get the same voices counts Without any HDX cards. Using just the Pro Tools | Ultimate software, you can add Voice Packs to your software. Each pack increases your total count by 128 addition voices. Voice pack 1 give you a total of 512 voices (384 standard + 128), pack 2 takes you up to 640 voices, and pack 3 gives you the total of 768. All of this with just your computer/laptop, no HDX hardware necessary.
