The final step in any production is getting all the tracks mixed together, and with this comes the ability to apply Mix Automation across various elements of your session. In this tutorial video, Avid Master Instructor Eric Kuehnl explains the different Mix Automation Modes, and shows you how you can use them in your session.
Working With Automation
Pro Tools lets you automate the following controls in real-time:
- Track Controls : Volume, Mute, Pan
- Send Controls : Send Volume, Send Mute, Send Pan
- All Plug-In Controls
Automation Modes
Pro Tools offers six main automation modes:
- Off - No automation playback or recording: all controls static
- Read - Default mode: will read any automation that has been recored, or edited
- Touch - Record Automation only while "Touching" a parameter, then Stop writing when you let go
- Latch - Record Automation only while "Touching" a parameter, then Continue writing when you let go
- Write - All enabled parameters will start writing automation the moment you playback the session. Will Overwrite any previous automation
- Touch/Latch - Combination of Touch Mode for Volume control, and Latch Mode for all other controls
