Many students who attend Pro Tools Certification at ProMedia Training ask for more assitance in mastering techniques. Though many techniques are unique to each mastering engineer, there are definitely consistencies in processes. Here, top mastering engineer Jett Galindo demonstrates her techniques in this 20 minute video tutorial demonstration.
Jett Galindo (The Bakery Los Angeles) was at the Avid stage to show how Pro Tools is used for Mastering music. Often misunderstood, Mastering is the final step in the process of finishing a music mix. The focus of Mastering is the Stereo Mix (2-track) to make sure a song plays back as accurately as possible across all various consumer playback systems (CD, iPod, etc...) Mastering Engineers do not "change" the sounds within the mix; that part is done during the Mixing stages, and has final approval from the artist. Once the mix is finished, the final mix is sent to Mastering, which will use equipment such as EQ's, Compression, Limiters, etc..., to make sure the final song will play back as dynamically as possible across different platforms. Additionally, mastering can allow for restoration of unintentional hisses, clicks or small mistakes possibly missed in the final mix. Mastering also ensures uniformity and consistency of sound between multiple tracks on an album creating a clean and cohesive feeling across all your audio.
